How To Answer, "Tell Me Something About Yourself".

One of the most commonly asked questions in job interviews is "tell me something about yourself." This simple yet tricky question can set the tone of the whole interview. Remember, you always want to create the best impression in the first few minutes of the conversation.

A lot of people think that the reason why interviewers ask this kind of question is to know basic things about you not knowing what interviewers are actually looking for. But how do you actually answer them? Do you tell them where you live? Your age? Where's your hometown? Which school you went to? How many cats you own? Or are you single?

Well, it's not that simple.

When an interviewer asks you to “tell them something about yourself”, they are not looking for your life story or personal details. Instead, they want to know how your qualifications and experience make you an ideal candidate for the job. Therefore, it is essential to prepare a concise, compelling response that highlights your relevant skills, experience and your ambition in life or in your career.

Here are some tips to help you answer the "tell me something about yourself" question during an interview:
1. Start with a brief introduction

Begin your answer by introducing yourself and your current or most recent job title. This will give the interviewer an idea of your professional background and set the stage for the rest of your response.

2. Focus on your relevant experience and skills

Highlight your most relevant work experience and skills that make you a good fit for the position. If possible, use examples to illustrate how you have used these skills in previous roles and how they would benefit the organisation.

3. Keep it concise

Keep your answer brief and to the point. Avoid rambling or going off on tangents that do not relate to the job at hand.

4. Be positive and enthusiastic

Show enthusiasm for the job and the organisation by highlighting why you are excited about the opportunity. Share your positive attitude and willingness to learn new things.

5. Practice your response

Prepare your response ahead of time and practice delivering it in a clear, confident manner. This will help you feel more comfortable and confident during the actual interview. Example: “Thank you for having here today. Hi, my name is Joe, and I am currently working as a Product Designer with Company X. I have been working as a Product Designer for 5 Years now and I really enjoy working with clients across different industries and help them turn their ideas into actual products.

In the last 2 years, I have been exposed not only in designing products, but I have also been involved in managing projects and dealing directly with my clients. Because of this, I feel like I am ready to move up and take on a more challenging role of a Product Manager or a Product Owner.”

Conclusion, the "tell me something about yourself" question is an opportunity for you to showcase your relevant experience and skills to a potential employer. By preparing a concise, compelling response and highlighting your positive attitude and enthusiasm, you can make a great impression and increase your chances of landing the job.
